How to set up BMW ICOM A2 Rheingold ISTA on VMware

Here is a step-by-step guide of configuring BMW ICOM Rheingold ISTA-D ISTA-P diagnostic & programming software on BMW ICOM A2+B+C diagnostic system.

Tool needed:

BMW ICOM A2 WIFI

ICOM Rheingold software HDD

NOTE:

As for BMW ICOM Rheingold software, we recommend 2015.1V Rheingold ISTA-D 3.47 ISTA-P 54.3 software HDD which performs more stable.

Instruction:

The configuration is based on Virtual Machine.

1. Open used for connection network adapter properties, then “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” properties, then enter 169.254.1.1 for “IP address” and 255.255.0.0 for “Subnet mask”

 

2. If VMware is installed, open Virtual Network Editor and disconnect from the host any adapters with Subnet address 169.254.0.0

3. Open C://EDIABAS/BIN/EDIABAS.INI with Notepad and check for “Port=6801” in TCP settings.

4. Set up ICOM A, ICOM B and ICOM C emulators, and connect BWM ICOM with vehicle and PC.

5. Run BMW ICOM Rheingold ISTA-D ISTA-P software shortcut on start menu, wait until it boots, then press “Settings” icon the top of the program

6. Select “VCI Config” (VCI Configuration) Tab and tick “HO-ICOM/ENET local and ISIS network”, press “OK”

 

7. Go to “Operations” menu, the “Read Out Vehicle Data” and “Complete Identification”

8. Select ICOM connection from the list and press “Set up connection” button. The Rheingold is detecting vehicle and vehicle identification is in progress.

Configuration is done. Start running software and diagnose/program BMW cars. 

BMW ICOM A2 ISTA-D starting problem (fixed)

Problem:
After connected the BMW ICOM diagnostic tool with vehicle and computer, starting running ISTA software, but he cannot open the ISTA-D software, the ISTA-D software soon fade out after booting. The system pops up an error message as the same time.

"Please wait while ISTA-D is starting!
Don't close ISPI-NEXT Admin Tools when ISTA is Running!"

Solution by obdii365 technician

Turn off the computer/laptop

Well connect the BMW ICOM A2 diagnostic system hardware with vehicle 

Wait the communication indicator lights on the bmw icom emulator flash

Then connect BMW ICOM to computer via LAN cable

Power on the computer

Open the ISTA-D software again

If the system prompts to tick OK, DO NOT tick OK, wait 1-2 minutes, the system will automatically enter into the ISTA software main interface

Note:

And tick ISTA-DE option in the button, it will make running speed faster 

The ISTA needs some time to boot, do not close the ISTA-D software when it is not fulled working and do not open another software program windows at this time.

Read Wiring diagram with BMW ICOM ISTA-D ISTA-P

A detail wiring diagram of BMW certain control module will help a lot in accessing and troubleshooting control unit. BMW ICOM ISTA-D ISTA-P engineering software will make things easier.

WIFI BMW ICOM A2+B+C diagnostic tool hardware
BMW ICOM software HDD (ISTA-D 3.46.30 ISTA-P 54.2.002 )

Setup ICOM A, B and C and then connect BMW ICOM A2+B+C diagnostic system with
Run BMW ICOM software HDD
Click “Product structure” Tab to select specific module, Drive control unit for example

Click “Function structure” Tab, select “Steering wheel heating”, press “Start search” button on the right button corner

Click on “SSP Steering wheel heater” option, press “Display” button on the right button corner

The BMW ICOM ISTA-D ISTA-P software HDD program will display the wiring diagram of the control unit you selected previously

Click on each component, you are able to view the detail wiring diagram of specific part of your vehicle

Press the magnifying icon, the wiring diagram will display in larger screen.

How to update BMW ICOM A1, A2 firmware to V1.40

How to update BMW ICOM A1,A2 firmware to V1.40/1.25?

Important Note:

To set your computer to automatically obtain IP address.

Steps

1. Using LAN cable to connect ICOM A2/A1 with computer, using 12V power adapter or connecting ICOM device with BMW to supply power for ICOM A2/A1.

2. Extract ICOM A1 A2 fw 1.40 upgrade files.

2. Open IE Internet Explorer, for perfect version ICOM (SP168-BA, browse address

http://169.254.33.45:60080/, log in with username/password: root/NZY1150263;

For other version of ICOM A2 or A1 (NO SP168-C, SP168-B, SP168 and SP168-D), browse http://169.254.92.38:60080/, the login username and password are the same.

3. Click “Update Firmware“, you will see ICOM firmware version information.

4. Click “Browse” to select file “ICOM-BootImage-01-24-00.bin“, set image type as “SYSTEM“, click “Send the file“.
5. When “Write the image file to the flash?” pops up, click “Yes”, then ICOM indicator will turn red.
6. When “The SYSTEM IMAGE update was successful” pops up, click “Update Firmware”.
7. Choose “ICOM-ApplicationImage-01-38-01.bin“, set image type as “APPLICATION“, click “Send the file“, it will cost several minutes because the file is a little bit large.
8. When “Write the image file to the flash?” pops up, click “Yes”, then the ICOM indicator will turn red for the second times.
9. When upgrade complete, click “reboot“.
10. Click “Home” – “Update Firmware” to check whether ICOM A2 firmware update to the newest version:

Current SYSTEM IMAGE version 01.25.02

Current APPLICATION IMAGE version 01.40.05

Note:

1. Setting up your computer to obtain an IP address automatically

2. Firstly choose the smaller file “ICOM-BootImage-01-13-00.bin” , then set image type to SYSTEM;

3. Secondly choose the bigger file “ICOM-ApplicationImage-01-18-00.bin”, then set image type to APPLICATION.

What's NCS Dummy software?

NCS Dummy can parse keyword trace files and retrieves all possible parameters, control unit data and order options for each function which makes NCS expert easier to understand.

Activating the CIC DVD in Motion Instruction:

1) Well loaded and install BMW ICOM NCS expert and NCS Dummy coding software

2) Set up and connect BMW ICOM diagnostic hardware with vehicle via OBD socket

3) Read the "FSW_PSW.TRC" trace file from the CIC module with NCS Expert and write down the module name (for example "CIC.C09").

4) Run NCS Dummy software

5)  Select BMW Chassis and module, click magnifier button to open the Find window.

Enter search item “SPEEDLOCK” and click “Find Next” (or click ENTER until you stumble upon the desired functions in the graphical trace editor: "SPEEDLOCK_X_KMH_MIN" and "SPEEDLOCK_X_KMH_MAX".

Right-click function "SPEEDLOCK_X_KMH_MIN" and choose "Add Parameter" from the popup menu.

6) Select the new parameters (marked red) and enter a parameter keyword for it, for example 255_kmh.  Set the data value to FF.

Repeat previous operation to find out "SPEEDLOCK_X_KMH_MAX" function

Click the "Module Functions" button and choose "Update Module..." from the dropdown list.

7) When a system pops out a prompt asking to update the module CIC.C**, press OK to update the module.

8) Load the trace file you read earlier with NCS Expert coding software.

Repeat previous operation to locate functions "SPEEDLOCK_X_KMH_MIN" and "SPEEDLOCK_X_KMH_MAX"

Tick the checkboxes for the new parameters (14) (15)

Search the function "VIDEO_NUR_MIT_HANDBREMSE" and make sure it is set to "nicht_aktiv".

9) Select "Export FSW_PSW.MAN" from the "Export FSW/PSW" button dropdown menu (16) to save the settings to an FSW/PSW trace manipulation file for coding with NCS Expert.

If "Enable Quick Export" is ticked you can quickly export the changes by simply clicking the "Export FSW/PSW" button.

10) Coding procedure is completed. Exit the NCS Dummy and NCS Expert software. Disconnect the BMW ICOM A2 wifi diagnostic system. 

Reset BMW ECU to factory setting by NCS Expert

If bimmers want to update your BMW ECU, retrofit CIC, or you have done a wrong coding/wrong setting, the best way is to bring it back to factory default settings. Here is an ECU resetting to factory settings guide with BMW ICOM engineering NCS-expert coding software.

BMW ICOM ISTA-D ISTA-P with engineering software NCS Expert
BMW ICOM A2+B+C diagnostic system
A laptop running Win 7 O/S

Instruction:

1) Loading profile

Well loaded and installed BMW NCS expert software
Set up and connect BMW ICOM a2+b+c diagnostic hardware with vehicle via OBD port
Open NCS expert software
Select Expert mode
Choose Expert Mode Profile
(If you do not have Expert Mode Profile, loading the file you usually using)
Click File>>Edit Profile>>FSW/PSW

Uncheck the option in the red box
Click OK
Click Profile Info>>name the profile as you want
Click OK to close the Profile Editor
Click File>>Save profile as the name your precious named
Now you have a profile for loading factory settings to any ECU in the car

2) Reset ECU to factory default setting

Press F1 button
Select F3 and choose your car chassis from the list
Click OK
Press F6
Press F4
Choose the ECU your would like to code with factory default options of your car
Press OK

Press F2
Choose “SG-CODIEREN”

Press OK
Press F3 “Execute Job” to start coding the ECU with factory setting according to your BMW vehicle order (VO)
ECU resetting is done. Exit the NCS expert software and disconnect the BMW ICOM hardware.

Change BMW E90 VO vehicle order with NCS-expert

BMW owners are able to enable or disable car retrofits or features by changing the VO (vehicle number) or FA string. The coding option can be done with BMW coding tools BMW ICOM ISTA-D ISTA/P engineering and programming software NCS-Expert.

Tool needed:

BMW ICOM a2+b+c diagnostic system

Instruction:

Code CAS:

Well install BMW ICOM software HDD and NCS Expert software

Connect BMW ICOM A2 wifi diagnostic tool with vehicle via USB or wifi wireless connection

Open NCS-expert file

Select File>>Load File>>Expert Mode, press OK

Press F1: VIN/ZCS/FA button

Press F3: ZCS/FA f. ECU button

Select BMW CHASSIS type:E89 in the list, press OK

Select ECU type: CAS, press OK

Then the NCS Expert software screen will display Chassis module, VIN number and VO/FA information

Press F2: Enter FA to change the vehicle order

Again select chassis type: E89

Confirm the VIN number list is correct

Enter the Service Code or SA in Attribute text field on Enter VIN program

---Service Codes begins with a “+”

---SA codes begins with a “$”

Press F6:Back button

Pres F4: Process ECU button

Choose ECU type: CAS, press OK

Press F2:Change Job button

Select FA_WRITE from Choose Job program

Confirm the CAS module is selected and the job name is equal to FA_WRITE

Press F3: Execute Job button

Code LMA:

Write the new VO to LMA ECU module

Press F1: Change ECU button

Select LMA ECU type in Choose ECU program, press OK

Confirm LMA ECU module is selected and the job name is equal to FA_WRITE

Press F3: Execute Job button

The coding has ended.

Exit BMW ICOM NCS Expert software. 

Disconnect BMW ICOM diagnostic system.
